Where to stay in Český Krumlov
For most trips: stay in the Inner Town or Latrán, walk everywhere, ignore the cheaper outskirts unless you're driving and on a budget. Below: the four neighbourhoods, and three hotels we'd actually book ourselves — across splurge, mid-range, and best-value tiers.
Four neighbourhoods, four trade-offs
Krumlov is small. From any of these you can walk to the centre in under 15 minutes. The choice is about atmosphere, noise, and price — not about distance.
Inner Town (Vnitřní Město)
First-timers, short stays. The historic centre — Náměstí Svornosti and the cobblestone lanes around it. Maximum atmosphere, maximum convenience for sightseeing. Trade-off: it's the noisiest part of town in summer, especially Fridays and Saturdays.
Suits · Couples on a 1–2 night trip, anyone who wants to walk to everything.
Not · Light sleepers, families with small kids who go to bed early, anyone with a car (no on-street parking).
Latrán
Romantic weekend. The castle side of the river — Český Krumlov's oldest neighbourhood. Slightly calmer than the Inner Town, with the same architectural charm. Main street runs from Budějovice Gate to Lazebnický Bridge. Hotels tend to cost a bit more here, but for a couples' weekend it's worth it.
Suits · Couples, mid-range and splurge stays.
Not · Backpackers, anyone allergic to hen / stag-do nights at the more central bars.
Plešivec
Quiet, family-friendly. Just east of the centre, across the Vltava from the Old Town. Residential, quiet at night, a 10-minute walk to the main square. Apartment rentals are common here and often cheaper than the centre.
Suits · Families, anyone driving (more parking), longer stays of 3+ nights.
Not · Travellers who want to step out of the door and be in the action.
Horní brána / Špičák
Cheapest, with a car. Around the upper gate and the bus station. You're a 10–15-minute downhill walk from the centre. Less atmospheric, but you'll find the cheapest pensions and apartments in town, and parking is much easier.
Suits · Budget travellers, day-trippers, drivers who don't want to deal with old-town parking.
Not · Anyone who's only here for one night — you'll spend half of it walking.

A 16th-century former Jesuit dormitory turned five-star hotel — Renaissance ceilings, an indoor pool, a sauna, a hot tub, and a terrace overlooking the Vltava. The most atmospheric place to stay in Krumlov, and priced accordingly.
Good for · Honeymoons. Anniversaries. Anyone who wants the building itself to be part of the trip.
Less good for · Modern-luxury fans — this is heritage-luxury, not sleek-luxury.

Inner Town · directly on Náměstí Svornosti
Right on the main square, four minutes from the castle. 4-star, air-conditioned rooms, a full breakfast, a 24-hour front desk. The reliable choice when you just want a comfortable, well-located base without overthinking it.
Good for · Couples, first-time visitors, anyone arriving late and not wanting to navigate.
Less good for · Light sleepers — main-square location means weekend evenings can be noisy.

Inner Town · old city wall, 5 min to the square
Family-run, eight rooms, in a building that used to be part of the city fortifications (originally a gunpowder store). Some rooms have Vltava views. 250 m from the bus station — easy arrival with luggage. The best value-for-money pick we've found in the centre.
Good for · Budget-conscious couples, anyone arriving by bus, view-seekers.
Less good for · Larger groups — only 8 rooms, books out early in season.

Common questions
How far in advance should I book accommodation in Český Krumlov?
For summer weekends (May–September), book 3–6 weeks ahead. The town only has around 2,000 hotel beds, and weekends sell out. Weekday stays in shoulder season can usually be booked a week in advance.
Is it cheaper to stay outside the centre?
Slightly, but not always worth it. The centre is small enough to walk across in 20 minutes, and the outer areas don't have much going on in the evening. We'd pay 10–20% more for a centre stay over saving on a property a kilometre out.
Can I park at my hotel?
Centre hotels generally don't have their own parking — they'll point you to one of the public P-lots and you pay separately. A few hotels on the outskirts (Plešivec, Horní brána) do have private parking included.
Are there hostels in Český Krumlov?
A few, mostly small and family-run. The dorm market is thin compared to Prague or Vienna. If you want a hostel atmosphere on a budget, a private room in one of the Horní brána pensions is usually the better deal.
