Day trips from Český Krumlov
Hallstatt is overrated by day-trippers. Lipno is closer. Holašovice is twenty minutes and a UNESCO win.
ReadČeský Krumlov isn't for everyone.
In August, between 11 and 16, the centre is denser than central Vienna. Add an hour of looking for parking and a tourist-priced lunch and it's fair to ask whether to bother.
Our view: it's worth going — but differently from how the official guides tell you. Here's our case, with specific "yes" and "no" windows.
Read the case- When to goMid-May to mid-June, all of September, weekday mornings in August, weekday Advent. Mist over the Vltava around 7am.
- When to skipSaturdays in July and August between 10 and 17. Festival weekends if you dislike crowds.
- When it's busiestAll weekends April–October, Advent weekends, Five-Petalled Rose Festival (late June), film festival (late August).
- Why stay overnightBetween 18:00 and 09:00 the town is unrecognisable. Day-trippers see the castle. Overnighters see Krumlov.
Where to eat without the tourist trap
From in-person visits between 2023 and 2026. No sponsored placements.

Open-fire grill in a medieval jail. Touristy on the surface, but the meat is real and the beer is honest. Book ahead for dinner.

One of the very few vegetarian-first places in town. Terrace right on the Vltava, indoor seating in a Gothic vault. Worth the slight detour.

Working brewery since 1560. 90-minute guided tour, tasting in the cellar, restaurant attached. Reservation strongly recommended in summer.
Depending on who you're travelling with
With kids
Castle gardens, river boat, fairy-tale museum. What works under 10, and what to skip.
02Solo / quiet
Right-bank walks, early-morning castle, off-square cafés. Where to read for a couple of hours.
03Romantic weekend
Riverside dinner, a small hotel with castle view, the Cloak Bridge at dusk.
04When it rains
Brewery, museums, two excellent cafés. The day doesn't have to be a wash.
05Winter visit
Castle closed November-March, but the Old Town is at its quietest. Mulled wine and mist.
06Free things to do
Castle gardens, the panoramic walks, every viewpoint. A day at zero koruna.

Rafting on the Vltava
Two-day float from Vyšší Brod to Boršov is the classic. Rentals in town, campsites along the river.

Christmas markets
Pretty on weekdays. On weekends the square is unwalkable. Plan accordingly.

Five-Petalled Rose Festival
Renaissance festival, third weekend of June. Worth the crowds — but book a year in advance.

Český Krumlov in winter
Castle's closed. The Old Town under mist before 9am is the best view of the year.
